Four miles long and 1/2 mile wide, North Captiva Island is one of Florida's most unspoiled west coast barrier islands. Only the northern third of this island can ever be developed. The rest is state parkland that will remain protected and serves as a sanctuary for birds and animals. There are no cars on the island and the modes of transportation are golf carts, bicycles, and walking. There are daily water taxis from Pine Island and Captiva Island, which are near Fort Myers, to take you to North Captiva Island. The Southwest Regional International Airport in Fort Myers provides the latest in comfort and safety and most major airlines are represented. North Captiva remains an unspoiled natural setting with pristine white sand beaches not unlike the best in the Caribbean. Lush tropical foliage surrounds many homes and adds to the magic of the island. All islanders travel between the approximately 300 homes in golf carts on winding golf cart paths amongst the lush vegetation. On island are two wonderful restaurants and an island store for extra grocery items, beverages, ice cream, hamburgers, and even deli sandwiches. Shelling on the island is the best on the Florida west coast since it is not heavily combed by tourists. The wildlife sanctuary has an unspoiled wilderness for those explorers who want to view an untouched refuge. Hiking the beaches and biking the narrow shell golf cart paths become one of the best daily rituals. Another favorite is viewing the birds from the rooftop decks with a pair of binoculars. Perhaps the best of all is watching the sunsets in an idyllic setting on the beach. North Captiva Island is the best kept vacation secret and truly the place to come to escape the crowds of tourists and relax "away from it all"! It is a place to unwind and enjoy the beaches, sunsets, stars, and nature; yet all in a luxury home.
